Exclusive Conversation with Bobby Long

Hello Twilighters!

As some of you may know, Mr. Bobby Long is a friend of Twilight News.  Bobby collaborated with Marcus Foster on the song ‘Let Me Sign’ which Robert Pattinson sings on the Twilight (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (available on iTunes).  We are delighted to help promote his career and spread some well deserved popularity! We are all very excited to see his fanbase growing and he truly appreciates all of the amazing support. Bobby is heading to the states in April to perform a couple of gigs and talk to a few industry people, many of you have already stated you plan to attend when and where you can and we thought you might want to get to know Bobby a bit better. So we took some time out a few days ago to sit down together and do an interview with some of the questions I have gathered from various Bobby Fans. It was rather impromptu but we had a laugh and I think you will all enjoy it as much as we enjoyed doing it!

Because I know accents can be a bit of a difficulty for some to understand, I have also transcribed the conversation so you can read along while you watch the interview!

I can also promise you a higher quality version of it by the end of the weekend!

Sanguina: So, you’re traveling to America soon?
Bobby Long: Yeah well, the main reason we’re going, we’re only doing a couple of gigs. A couple of gigs in New York and a couple of gigs in LA. Kind of mainly for, what ever happens in summer… But this now, now… is kind of mainly for industry to come along and if people wanna come along to support me there then that would be amazing obviously.

Sanguina: So the more people who come and see you the more likely they are to get your music sooner, yeah?
Bobby:
Yeah definitely. I just feel like I need to act now in a way. I’d love to record in America and, and live there actually. I really like the idea of doing some thing really fresh and new and doing an album out there one day. So, yeah if people wanna come along to the 13th and 14th and a few shows in LA.  So if people wanna come along it’d be amazing, be great for the support but we’re just starting off small and seeing where we can take it its to talk to some industry people to get a record.

S: What are you looking forward to in America?
BL:
I’m just looking forward to playing really. And I’ve always wanted to go to New York and LA, so…

S: Will it be your first time?
BL:
Yeah, My first time in New York and LA, yeah. So I look forward to seeing the place. I’m just reading this book called Angela’s Ashes. It’s one of my favourite books and read it for like the 5th time and its all about New York so I was getting really excited about that last night, didn’t sleep so.. yeah, I’m looking forward to playing really. And hopefully meeting up with some people who can help me out a little bit, hopefully just pushing things forward.

S: Do you prefer small venues or large venues?
BL:
I just want to play EVERYTHING! I just want to play big venues and small venues and yeah. I love playing.

S: How old were you when you wrote your first song?
BL:
Um, 17? 18? 18.

S: Do you still play it?
BL:
No! No, it’s absolutely crap. Terrible. Shockingly bad.

S: Have you ever wanted to do anything other than music?

BL: No. Well, I wanted to do acting at first but that is just because I kind of liked the idea of not working a 9-5 job but… otherwise, I don’t know, I liked the idea of being a carpenter but then I was shit with wood.

S: Do you play everything you write?
BL:
Well, I write a song a week. I write all the time and I just discard them. Like only, I probably write, I dunno… Prob, on average, I write say like 3 songs a month and then one will make it through. The other two I’ll just never play or… I hate them. I hate them.

S: If you were on a desert island what kind of music would you listen to?
BL:
Um, what would it be? (Pause) I’ll tell you WHO I’d listen to.

S: Yeah?
BL:
I’d listen to, like, this Louis Armstrong with Jack Teagarden album (also available on iTunes). I listen to that kind of jazz all the time, I never ever turn it off. Yeah, that’s what I’d listen to. Because I love every other kind of music, but that kind of stuff… It’s the first kind of music I ever heard so I feel very comfortable with it.

S: What do you do in your spare time?
BL:
Um, I read and write. I write a lot. And watch films. And go out. I like drinking… with my friends… and socialising.

S: What’s your favourite movie genre?
BL:
Genre? I love gangster films. Sort of Goodfellas and The Godfather, they’re probably my favourite to be honest.

S: What would be your perfect date?
BL:
Perfect date? I don’t really go on them, I’ve never even been on one…

S: You’ve never been on a date?
BL:
I have. No, my perfect date would be…

…go watch the bullfighting. Bullfighting and then a nice little meal. Vegetarian just to even it up a little bit.

I’ve got one! Ask me again. Ask me, ask me again!

S: What was it? Your perfect date…
BL:
My perfect date would be fishing…
and it would…

(Phil, Bobby’s manager, in the background: ‘With a harpoon…’)

BL: …with a harpoon!
(We all laugh)

BL: No… fishing, in a boat obviously and then uh… what else could I do, a little bit of a drive… somewhere nice and then… (thinking out loud to himself: what do I really wanna do all the time?)… yeah that’d be it. And I’d just get it for a meal, and eat the fish on the beach, stay in a tent and listen to music, a bit of jazz.

S: Do you have any guilty pleasure shows that you watch?
BL:
The X-Factor. I kind of watch that until it gets to the contest thing and then… What? I watch something else… Oh, Kill It, Cook It, Eat It? Like, I would buy that on DVD. I don’t like things getting killed but I’m kind of weirdly fascinated by it so that’s probably my favourite.

S: Does the idea of fame bother you? Have you seen it affect people? Are you ready for it?
BL:
I don’t really know anybody, like the only one I know is Rob and he’s really cool, completely unaffected by anything so… Um, but am I ready?

S: Are you ready for the insanity?
BL:
The insanity? Not really. I don’t know. I just… I am not really… I’d like to say I’m not interested in it because I don’t want it, I just want to do music but if it comes alongside me doing music then I can deal with it. It’s just when it’s out of context. If it’s at a gig then I can understand people are enthusiastic and it’s lovely. When people listen to your songs it’s the most amazing thing in the world but I don’t think I could deal with it to the extreme levels of all the time. I don’t want that really.

S: What was your first job?
BL:
My first job? Burger King but I got sacked for nicking kid’s toys.

S: What was your worst job?
BL:
My worst.. oh did you say my best job or first job?

S: No, first!
BL:
Ok, I was gonna say my best job… Burger King? No. My worst job working a call center and I got a stutter and it was horrible and I’d be like “w-w-” and it wasn’t very nice.

S: What do you eat for comfort food?
BL:
*thinking out loud* Comfort? What do I eat all the time?

Boiled Eggs!

S: Boiled Eggs?
BL:
Yeah.  I had one today, it was kind of comforting.

S: What was your favourite cartoon as a kid?
BL:
He-Man

S: Did you like She-Ra as well?
BL:
*Nods*

S: She was his sister.
BL:
Yeah, I did actually. I don’t know, was she his sister? That was why they never…
But yeah, she was great, she was really pretty.
